FoBAB 2013 Results

These are the results of the 2013 Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers competition, the 11th anniversary of the event, held on November 16th, 2013. The event is run by the Illinois Craft Brewer’s Guild and held this year at the Bridgeport art Center – Skyline Loft in Chicago. The National Wood Aged Beer Competition is judged by a panel of industry experts prior to the public sessions. Each beer is judged on the basis of how that underlying style reflects the expression of wood and/or barrel character. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals are awarded in 11 categories as well as “best of show.”

  1. […] FoBAB, the Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beers, gives a lucky ticket holder the opportunity to try over 213 different beers from 95 breweries. The festival, which is in it’s 11th year, is actually a competition. Brewery’s submit their beers into 11 categories including: Classic Porter/ Stout, Strong Porter/Stout, Barleywine/Wheatwine, Classic styles (not higher than 7% ABV), Strong/Double Pale Beer, Strong/Double Dark Beer, Fruit Beer, Experimental Beer, Wild/Brett, Wild/Acidic and Cider/Mead. Then a panel of qualified judges decides which of these rare beers reign supreme. Best in Show went to Bell’s for their 100% Brett beer called Le Bretteur, which was aged on French Oak Chardonnay barrels. I found to be a particularly well balanced, clean tasting and fun to drink. 2. […] Prior to the public tasting sessions, all of the beers were judged by a panel of industry experts to determine winners (gold, silver and bronze) for each category and a Best in Show. These were announced to the crowd toward the end of the first session. For the full list of 2013 FoBAB winners, click here. […]
